[ARCHIVED] Waterloo-Washington Intersection Moves to Three-Way Stop

Waterloo-Washington Intersection Change

Coming soon, the City of Canal Winchester will implement new signage and roadway markers to make the W. Waterloo Street and Washington Street intersection a three-way stop.  These changes are expected to take place within the next 30 days.

City staff decided to make the intersection a three-way stop following studies completed by our City Engineers at EMH&T.   By reconfiguring the intersection from a one-way stop to a three-way stop, traffic congestion and pedestrian safety are expected to improve in the area.

The Canal Winchester Public Service Department is currently working with contractors to implement new roadway markers to reflect the change.  New signage has been secured and will be installed in addition to pavement striping.

For more information on the intersection update, contact Matt Peoples, Public Service Director, at 614-834-5111.

Project FAQ:

How is the intersection changing?

W. Waterloo Street and Washington Street will now be a three-way stop.  Vehicular traffic travelling in either direction along W. Waterloo will now have to stop at Washington St., in addition to the vehicular traffic on northbound Washington St. stopping at W. Waterloo.

What changes will be made to signage?

Additional stop signs will be installed along Waterloo Street.  Temporary signage will also be installed to raise awareness of the intersection changes.

Will the stop signs flash or light up?

No.  This intersection does not meet the recommended guidelines for flashing stop signs.

Will there be any lane changes?

Not at this time.  However, additional pavement markings will be added to the roadway.

How will this impact the Washington-Groveport Road intersection?

We anticipate that these changes will help with pedestrian safety in that area as well.  However, we recognize that traffic congestion from Groveport Road to northbound Washington Street may be impacted.  Our crews will be closely monitoring this area to determine if additional changes are needed.
