[ARCHIVED] June 4, 2020 - UPDATE, Peaceful Demonstrations

Canal Winchester

UPDATE, June 4, 2020 - Over the last week, peaceful demonstrations have taken place in Canal Winchester, and additional peaceful demonstrations are expected throughout our downtown tomorrow, June 5, in the early evening hours.  We have been told that organizers are planning for peaceful protests with participation from local clergy, educators, residents, and others.

Similar protests have recently taken place throughout the nation following the shocking video of George Floyd being killed in Minneapolis.  While we are mindful that otherwise peaceful protests in other communities have in some instances turned violent or sparked acts of vandalism, we expect the protests in Canal Winchester to again be peaceful demonstrations.

We respect the choice of protesters to peacefully exercise their constitutional right to speak out against police brutality, racism, injustice and inequality.  Respect and concern for the well-being of others makes a community stronger and a more welcoming place to live, work, or do business. We firmly and unequivocally denounce inequality and racism here - and everywhere.  Such biases and behaviors are unacceptable in a peaceful, loving, and inclusive community.  We understand, though, that no community is ever perfect, and every community has room for improvement, including our own.  We are, therefore, committed to improving and working to make Canal Winchester an example of a community dedicated to equality, unity, and peace.

We understand that working toward these ideals must be a community effort, so we will soon be calling on residents to become involved in our Community Health Action Team.  Look for details from our Community Affairs office in the coming days.  We are together; We are Canal Winchester.

UPDATE, June 2, 2020, 7pm - A peaceful demonstration took place in Canal Winchester this afternoon.

We are pleased that even in challenging times such as these, we see a commitment to kindness as we live and work together peacefully.

We understand there are rumors that a peaceful protest has been scheduled in Canal Winchester for 3:45pm today, June 2, 2020, and at 4pm on Friday, June 5, 2020. Law enforcement has not received a credible confirmation of such a planned protest, however, the Sheriff’s Office and City Officials are aware of the social media posts on this subject.  Please watch for updates, sign up for real-time alerts, and continue to follow us online and on social media.
