Community Week to replace annual Scouting for Food drive due to COVID-19

Organizers of the Scouting for Food drive in Canal Winchester aim to raise $25,000 in a Community Week campaign to support Canal Winchester Human Services.

Community Week will run April 18 through April 26.

The annual Scouting for Food, which began in 2006, was scheduled to take place March 28. It was canceled for safety reasons due to COVID-19.

Canal Winchester Human Services Director Aletha Mullins said monetary donations for Community Week will fund immediate needs of the organization’s programs, which include the Community Food Pantry and Emergency Assistance program.

Mullins said the food pantry has experienced an increase in clients this month. She anticipates requests for the Emergency Assistance program from residents in need to rise in coming weeks.

“Community Week will allow us to help more people, and it will allow us to broaden some of our services,” Mullins said. “It will also help us continue to keep food available here at the pantry.”

Last year’s Scouting for Food drive yielded 4,799 items and more than $200 in monetary donations.

Scouts BSA Troop 103 Scoutmaster Doug Snyder said he and fellow scout leaders in Canal Winchester are providing the leadership and management of the Community Week campaign on behalf of Canal Winchester Human Services.

“We are eager to launch Community Week, which will ultimately in turn help our neighbors in need of assistance during this stressful time,” Snyder said.

To participate in Community Week, visit cwhumanservices.org and click the “Donate Now” button. Checks can be sent by mail (write “Community Week” in the memo) to Canal Winchester Human Services, 80 Covenant Way, Canal Winchester, OH 43110.
